Attention, Balance & Compassion - The New ABCs of Learning

Welcome!

Welcome to mindfulness together a social network for adults committed to nurturing the inner lives of kids and those who love them.

Our mission is to promote a more peaceful and caring society by developing an engaged, grassroots, online community dedicated to sharing secular mindful awareness with children, teens and their families.

If you are not familiar with mindful awareness it is both a way of being in the world and a largely introspective process of actively attending to life experience from a perspective of kindness and compassion for self and others. Perhaps Jack Kornfeld describes it best when he writes: "Mindfulnes is an innate human capacity to deliberately pay attention to where we are, to our actual experience, and to learn from it."

We hope you will join our community and participate in the discussions here. We encourage you to share your thoughts by posting or commenting on blogs; and to connect with others who have similar interests.

Once again we'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you, we are delighted that you're here.

My story

I would like to share some story about myself.

When I was 18 years old, I didn’t know much alternative ways to relax. I had trouble with sleeping and generally was not able to relax myself, as I didn’t know how. I searched one day on internet by word “relaxation” and found some article that described it something like this - one may lie down first, then relax body part by part by relaxing all muscles, and in such a way overly relaxed whole body.
I started practicing this. I lie down and focused… Continue

I'm Bringing Not Sexy Back -- Lori Mozilo

Last night, as I threw off the blankets for the thirtieth time, trying to regulate my broken internal thermostat, I had this thought: “Is this menopause, or am I losing my mind?” I thrashed around all night. Duvet on, duvet off. Fan on, fan off. “Night Sweats,” I kept saying over and over to my groggy self, lying there in the dark. Night sweats are what I’m plagued with and night sweats are also the best description of the bedclothes I’ve been forced to wear to wick up the perspiration that pour… Continue

Building Emotional Intelligence and Fostering Resilience in Children -- Linda Lantieri

We are learning from recent brain science that children’s brains go through major growth up until their mid-twenties and their neural circuits are shaped by the day-to-day experiences they have. Children who are well-nurtured and whose parents and teachers help them learn how to calm down when they are upset, for instance, seem to develop greater strength in the brain’s circuitry for managing distress and will be less likely to act on aggressive impulses.

Parents can play a key role in supporti… Continue

Thoughts about translation when adapting classical practice for secular use

Hi everyone - I'm excerpting from a practice tip from Ken Mcleod's newsletter which I thought was quite helpful, particularly when thinking about how to secularize classical practices for use in educational and family systems. Some of you may recognize Ken as a meditation teacher in LA, who wrote the book Wake Up to Your Life, he is trained in the Tibetan tradition and is one of my own teachers. Warmly, Susan

I've become fascinated by Karen Armstrong's discussion of the Socratic method

While my politics tend to be quite far to the left of center - there are two women whose writing has resonated with me, even though their politics are considerably more conservative than mine. Peggy Noonan and Karen Armstrong. Both women have been advocating a more civil debate of the major issues of the day than what we often see on TV or read on the Internet, newspapers, etc.

Karen Armstrong has written recently about the Socratic method - defined in wikipedia as "a form of inquiry and debate… Continue
